Remember when Mom made yummy dips and spreads as appetizers when having a party? Here are a few retrieved from an old recipe box from 1976. These quick and easy recipes for snacks and appetizers will delight family and friends.

Take the stress out of entertaining with inexpensive, and easy to prepare, make-ahead appetizers that everyone will enjoy. The Hot Appetizer Pie is an especially substantial appetizer that is good for a hungry group and a perfect appetizer to carry to someone else's party.

Crab Spread Appetizer

An easy and tasty spread for crackers for the party table was a staple for many occasions including the Super Bowl. A hearty multi-grain, wheat or rye cracker is recommended for this easy to prepare appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz package cream cheese
  • 2 T Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 T mayonnaises
  • 2 T grated onion
  • 6 oz crab meat
  • 6 oz chili sauce
  • Parsley flakes

Directions

  1. Soften cream cheese
  2. Add Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, grated onion
  3. Gently blend ingredients together
  4. Mix ½ crab meat into mixture
  5. Shape into ball, log or square on serving dish
  6. Pour chili sauce over top
  7. Sprinkle remaining crab meat over top
  8. Sprinkle with parsley for decoration

Hot Appetizer Pie

This yummy make-ahead appetizer is good hot or at room temperature. Family and friends will be hovering around this delicious appetizer from the 1973 edition of Three Rivers Cookbook published by the Child Health Association of Sewickley, Inc. This holiday recipe can be made ahead and refrigerated, then popped in the oven just before the party.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz package cream cheese
  • 2 T milk
  • 2.5 oz jar dried beef, cut fine
  • 2 T finely chopped green pepper
  • 2 T finely chopped onion
  • ½ t crushed black pepper
  • ½ C sour cream
  • ¼ C chopped walnuts

Directions

  • Soften cream cheese and blend with milk
  • Add all other ingredients except nuts
  • Pat mixture into 8” Pyrex pie plate
  • Sprinkle walnuts over top
  • Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes
  • Place pie plate on a colorful platter and serve with crackers

Oriental Vegetable Party Dip

A simple and tangy dip to serve with a vegetable platter. Use colorful vegetables cut in bite-size pieces to satisfy all the veggie lovers.

Ingredients

  • 1 C mayonnaise
  • 4 t soy sauce
  • 1 t ground ginger
  • 1 T grated onion
  • 1 t vinegar
  • 2 T or less of milk (depending on consistency of dip)

Directions

  1. Mix first 5 ingredients together
  2. Stir in milk for the right consistency for dipping

Some good dipping vegetables:

  • Broccoli
  • Carrot sticks
  • Celery sticks
  • Sweet pepper strips
